World Children’s Day 2022
World Children’s Day 2022
Around the world, children are raising their voices to create a better future. We thought this was a good opportunity to catch up with some of our amazing Children’s Social Workers to find out more about the impact of their roles on children in the community. Here’s what they had to say…
What impact do you think being a children's social worker has on children in the community?
Ray: Our main focus is on ensuring children are safeguarded, which is key for the children in Hampshire.
What inspired you to become a Children's Social Worker?
Ray: I came into children’s social work in the early 1990s. I trained to be a Probation Officer but saw a child care job that I found to be interesting, and have since that time worked in Children’s services when working with the LA.
Gbemi: My previous job was with a Christian charity organisation, where I experienced working with children and families in the community and have since developed and joined Connect2Hampshire.
How do you think the community can help to support vulnerable children?
Ray: There must be a commitment to ensuring children are safe and being cared for – this includes having the ability to make a referral when needed to get the help in place.
Gbemi: It would be good for awareness programs provided to members of the community to help them gain more of an understanding of what it means when a child is described as vulnerable, and the reasons why the families may need support.
What advice would you give to someone looking at pursuing a career in Children's Social Work in Hampshire?
Ray: The work is hard and sometimes the hours are long, but it is so rewarding when you know your intervention has improved a child’s life and well-being.
Gbemi: Be prepared as the profession can be stressful at times, but it is so rewarding.
Many thanks to our wonderful Social Workers who are committed to improving the well-being of children and families within Hampshire.
