My Passion for the Care Sector
My Passion for the Care Sector
Monday afternoon and certainly not your average Monday. Who would have thought that while I’m sitting here at home listening to the beautiful sound of birds, that we are currently in a worldwide pandemic? I had forgotten for just a short moment with no constant sirens, traffic, just enjoying the silence. When I first moved into my home 6 years ago the noise of ambulances took some getting used to but eventually it did. However, over the last few months the constant sound has become harrowing.
When we started lockdown, I remember thinking I can’t see one positive to come out of this situation, but now thankfully I can see a lot. I am so grateful to the wonderful company I work for, Connect2Hampshire for allowing me the opportunity to work from home and have quality time with my son who unfortunately didn’t get the opportunity to finish his exams. I am also grateful for the walks, the sunshine, nature and the places on my doorstep that I would never have seen if it wasn’t for lockdown. I think, like most people, we have realised there were so many things we probably took for granted before the pandemic.
This time has also given me a chance to reflect, in particular to think about my mum who has been sheltering for 4 months due to COPD and how we miss her dearly. However, we are thankful she is staying safe indoors as we had a scare just over two years ago when she was rushed in to hospital. It is easy to assume that these things happen to other people and will never happen to you. My mum has COPD with her lungs working at 30% capacity, but she also suffers with Asthma and we also learned that she had pneumonia. She was so sick that they gave her a 50/50 chance of pulling through. If she did pass away, they wouldn’t resuscitate her and she wouldn't be put on life support. These are words that will haunt me forever. It was the worst 24 hours of my life but thanks to the wonderful doctors, nurses and carers she pulled through.
I had no idea how hard these staff work, how compassionate they are and that it really does takes a unique individual with a selfless heart to do these jobs. I remember thinking that I wanted to give back, I wanted to help and I was given that opportunity though Connect2Hampshire as a recruitment consultant. They not only employed me and gave me adequate training, but they put me in a team looking after care homes. I was given the opportunity to recruit the perfect candidate that has the necessary strengths, similar to those I found in the staff looking after my mum. This is so important to me and I have such a passion for it. It really is the best job in the world and I am so grateful to have been given this chance.
