A Day in the Life of a Social Worker - Part One
A Day in the Life of a Social Worker - Part One
The beginning of this week marks the start of Social Work Week. A week where Social Work is celebrated, and the hard work of Social Workers is widely recognised.
We thought it would be a good idea to shine a light on some of our amazing direct Social Workers, we wanted to get an insight on what life is like as a Social Worker and how the pandemic has affected their role.
In our first interview we spoke with a Qualified Children’s Social Worker based in the CAST Team, located in Basingstoke.
Can you describe what a normal day in your role entails?
A normal day my role entails visiting high need and at-risk children in their homes and schools, liaising with professionals from different agencies, producing reports and plans for conferences, reviews or court and generally going a 100mph!
What challenges do you face as a social worker?
The main challenges are resistance from service users who may not want you to be involved and having to use your interpersonal skills to build trust with them.
What do you like most about your job?
When you get a really good outcome with a family having been able to establish a trusting and respectful relationship with them. The unpredictability as well when you face a crisis and go into rescue mode.
Have you faced additional struggles due to the Covid-19 pandemic?
We are seeing increasing levels of families in crisis. Covid has been an amplifier for people’s difficulties, and we are seeing people breaking down and not coping and it can be very upsetting to work with.
What do you do outside of work to wind down?
I try to keep fit with running and swimming when the gyms are open! I also play dance music loud to keep the motivation and endorphins flowing!
