About the Role

Are you keen to empower the next generation of cyclists to use Hampshire roads safely and confidently, supporting and enabling the very best opportunities for children and young people?

With an office base in Winchester and the requirement to work flexibly and travel frequently across the wider Hampshire, you will be confident to work with a diverse range of children and young people and be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellent professional practice.

Tasks will include

  • Deputising for the Tutor where required
  • Driving the Bikeability van when qualified to do so
  • Risk assessing the training sites and routes and recording the results
  • Planning each training session activity
  • Monitoring and reviewing all delivery activity
  • Supporting the delivery of the quality improvement plan
  • Offering support to the Assistant Instructors (as required)
  • Delivering Bikeability cycle training
  • Managing groups with excellent communication skills, planning and positivity
  • Confirming course timings, content and ground rules with riders
  • Establishing riders' current cycling abilities (baseline assessment) and identifying any special or additional learning needs
  • Ensuring all resources required to meet the needs of riders and the course are provided
  • Issuing every training course attendee with a completed Bikeability award
  • Basic cycle maintenance as required

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Keen and confident cyclist with use of own bicycle and helmet
  • Comfortable cycling and working outdoors in all weathers
  • Ability to travel across the wide geographical Hampshire area
  • Ability to transport self and required equipment to school premises within Hampshire
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic IT skills, with a good level of literacy and numeracy
  • Level 2 award in Instructing Cycling Training - or a willingness to undertake the relevant training to bring you to the correct standards to comply with the Bikeability Grant conditions
  • Be punctual, reliable and trustworthy

Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Experienced in training or instructing children and young adults (training and support will be provided to address any skills gaps)
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • First Aid qualification
  • Experience of working with young people in a variety of environments
  • Experience of having worked with a diverse range of children and young people.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety and emergency procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding
  • Knowledge and skills in basic bicycle maintenance

Vetting Requirements

This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check. As such please note, we will take up references prior to interview.

Working Conditions

  • Engaging in physically active outdoor training sessions throughout the year and in all weather conditions
  • Frequent lifting and moving and handling of bicycles
  • Frequent travel to distribute bicycles across the operational area and to deliver the Bikeability cycling training.
  • Driving a company van to deliver bicycles ready for learning sessions, casual staff may drive the vans but this is rare.
